One rookie's first day of Formula 1 practice ended with a reprimand, and one Grand Prix winner already knows he will lose five places whatever happens in qualifying. Those were the stewards' two Friday verdicts at Interlagos on São Paulo Grand Prix weekend. Haas debutant Rafael Câmara was found to have unnecessarily impeded Charles Leclerc at Turn 15 in second practice, while Mercedes fitted George Russell's car with his sixth internal combustion engine of the season.

A close call before the main straight

The 21-year-old Brazilian was completing his first official F1 session day after Haas parted ways with Esteban Ocon following the Mexico weekend. He was warned several times that Leclerc was approaching on a fast lap, yet weaved well into the racing line on the uphill run towards the main straight. Leclerc jinked right to avoid contact and put a large part of his Ferrari off the track.

After hearing from Câmara and team representatives and reviewing video, onboard footage and team radio, the stewards judged the incident clearly dangerous. Impeding in practice usually earns a warning; this time they issued a driving reprimand instead. It is Câmara's first of the season and carries no grid drop, although five driving reprimands in one season bring an automatic grid penalty.

The timing was poor for Leclerc, whose Friday amounted to that single hour after Dino Beganovic drove his car in first practice. The Monegasque ended the session seventh and Câmara 16th, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli fastest. Should the Haas rookie take the start on Sunday, it will be the first time since 2016 that two Brazilians, he and Gabriel Bortoleto, line up for their home race.

Sixth engine, five places

Russell's penalty came as no surprise. He retired with a technical failure in round 16 at Sepang, and in Singapore he had already gone beyond his season allocation and started from near the back of the grid. This time only the internal combustion engine has been changed, and because it is not the first unit over the limit, the regulations call for a five-place drop rather than ten.

"We felt like this was a good place to take it," Russell said in a Mercedes Instagram story, pointing to Lewis Hamilton's 2021 victory at Interlagos. His own title hopes ended a week ago in Mexico City, where team-mate Antonelli sealed the championship. Russell sits fourth on 250 points with three wins and three retirements this year, and in the intra-team battle he has finished ahead of Antonelli in only five of 19 races.

Pole is no guarantee at Interlagos

The choice of venue is backed by hard numbers. Only 19 of the 42 Grands Prix held at Interlagos have been won from pole, a rate of 45.2%. Two memorable exceptions in recent years both followed engine penalties: Hamilton won from tenth in 2021, Max Verstappen from 17th in 2024. Verstappen was in exactly Russell's position then, as his sixth engine of the season cost him five places at the 2024 São Paulo Grand Prix.

In seven of the last ten races, the winner started from pole.

Russell knows the feeling of winning here: his maiden Grand Prix victory came at Interlagos in 2022, albeit from pole. It remains his only podium in six starts at the circuit.

Whatever Russell achieves in Saturday's qualifying, he will line up five places lower. Two years ago, 12th on Saturday was enough for Verstappen to stand on the top step on Sunday evening.

Frequently asked questions

Why was Rafael Câmara reprimanded at the São Paulo Grand Prix?

The stewards ruled that he unnecessarily and dangerously impeded Charles Leclerc at Turn 15 in second practice, despite being warned several times that the Ferrari was on a fast lap. A warning is the usual sanction in practice, but this time he received a driving reprimand.

How big is George Russell's grid penalty in Brazil?

Five places. Mercedes fitted the sixth internal combustion engine of his season, so Russell will start Sunday's race five positions behind where he qualifies.

Does a reprimand lead to a grid penalty in Formula 1?

A single reprimand does not. A driver who collects five driving reprimands in one season, however, receives an automatic grid penalty. Câmara's is his first.

Has anyone won at Interlagos after an engine penalty?

Yes, twice in recent years. Lewis Hamilton won from tenth on the grid in 2021 and Max Verstappen from 17th in 2024, both after five-place penalties for a new engine.
