Andrea Kimi Antonelli made his Formula 1 debut in 2025, at just 18 years old, with Mercedes as Lewis Hamilton's successor – making him the third-youngest starter in the sport's history. But his story began much earlier: the boy from Bologna joined the Mercedes Junior Programme at the age of twelve, embarking on a path that led from karting through Italian and German Formula 4, the Formula Regional European Championship and Formula 2, straight into a Mercedes race seat.

Antonelli's career has been defined by an extraordinarily fast pace: in almost every category he entered, he came away with a title or came close to one, and Formula 1 teams took notice of him already as a teenager. His career is also unusual in that his father, Marco Antonelli, was himself a racing driver and team owner, so motorsport was effectively part of the family environment from his childhood.

The early years

Antonelli's father, Marco Antonelli, was a racer himself: he competed in the Italian Superturismo championship for four seasons in the 1990s, and entered two rounds of the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC) in 2002. He later competed as a gentleman driver in GT3 racing, before founding the AKM Motorsport team, which has since run programmes in the International GT Open, GT World Challenge Europe, Porsche Supercup and Formula 4.

Kimi first sat in a kart at the age of six, in 2012, near his hometown of Forlì. In the summer of 2014, at just seven years old, he took part in an ACI Sport summer camp, where he caught the eye of Giovanni Minardi, who from then on guided him towards a more serious academy programme and eventually Formula 1. His first serious racing season came in 2015: at the age of eight he competed in the Easykart 60 category, immediately winning the Easykart 60 Italian Trophy title.

Karting career

Over the following years Antonelli gradually worked his way up through the karting categories, picking up numerous WSK race wins in the Mini and OK-Junior classes. In 2019, in the OK-Junior category, he won the WSK Euro Series and the WSK Super Master Series, finished second in the FIA Karting European Championship and fifth in the World Championship.

In 2020, now in the OK category, he claimed the FIA Karting European Championship title – the final was held in Wackersdorf, Germany, where he won the final from pole position and ultimately took the title with 67 points, two points ahead of Taylor Barnard – and he also won the OK category of the WSK Euro Series. For his performances he was named FIA Rookie of the Year. In 2021 he defended his OK category European Championship title, before switching to single-seaters later that same year.

Junior single-seater career

Antonelli made his debut in the Italian Formula 4 Championship with Prema Powerteam in 2021, in the season's last three rounds: across nine races he took three overall podiums and four wins in the rookie category. In 2022 he raced a full season, winning the Italian F4 and German ADAC Formula 4 championships simultaneously with Prema – across the two series he collected 22 race wins, 21 pole positions and 27 podiums in total (13 wins from 20 races in the Italian championship, 9 wins from 15 races in the ADAC series).

In 2023 he moved up to the Formula Regional category: he won the Formula Regional Middle East Championship with Mumbai Falcons, then, racing for Prema Racing, also claimed the Formula Regional European Championship (FRECA) title with five race wins, eleven podiums and four pole positions, finishing 39 points clear of the runner-up.

In 2024 – skipping FIA Formula 3 – he moved straight into Formula 2, again with Prema, partnering (for most of the season) Oliver Bearman, who later moved to Ferrari. He won two races in his very first season – one in a rain-hit sprint race at Silverstone, the other by capitalising on a safety car period at the Hungaroring – and finished sixth in the standings. He had to miss the season finale in Abu Dhabi due to illness.

The road to Formula 1

Antonelli joined the Mercedes Junior Programme in April 2019, at the age of twelve – making him, after George Russell, the second driver to progress from the Mercedes academy all the way to the team's Formula 1 seat. His continuous progress in the junior single-seater categories – two Formula 4 titles, an FRECA title, then a strong rookie season in Formula 2 – drew increasing attention, while Mercedes gradually involved him more and more in the team's F1 operations.

In 2023, while still in the middle of his Formula Regional season, he made a one-off guest appearance in the Italian GT Championship with his father's AKM Motorsport team, with special permission from Mercedes and Toto Wolff. In 2024, while competing in Formula 2, he got behind the wheel of a Mercedes F1 car on several occasions: in September, during the Italian Grand Prix weekend, he was given his first Free Practice (FP1) outing at Monza, and after the season he also impressed in the young driver test and further private tests.

In August 2024, Mercedes announced that Antonelli would be signed for the 2025 season as Lewis Hamilton's successor, partnering George Russell – Hamilton having moved to Ferrari at that point.

Formula 1 career

Antonelli made his Formula 1 debut at the Australian Grand Prix in March 2025, aged 18 years and 203 days – making him the third-youngest starter in the sport's history, and Mercedes' thirteenth F1 driver. He broke several youth records right in his rookie season: at the Japanese Grand Prix he became the youngest driver ever to lead an F1 race and to set the fastest lap, while at the Miami sprint he took the sport's youngest-ever pole position. He finished his first season with three podium finishes and seventh place in the championship.
