Who is Lance Stroll?

Lance Stroll is one of the youngest Canadian drivers to have made it big: at just 18 he was already standing on a Formula 1 podium, and his career is closely intertwined with his family background too, since his father, Lawrence Stroll, is today part of the ownership group of the Aston Martin Aramco F1 team. But before he became an F1 driver, Stroll put together one of the most convincing junior single-seater résumés around: he won championship titles in two consecutive seasons, and in 2016 delivered one of the most dominant Formula 3 seasons ever seen.

Since his F1 debut in 2017, his career has taken him through Williams, Racing Point and Aston Martin, and alongside that he has periodically returned to the world of sports cars too: he lined up at the Daytona 24 Hours in both 2016 and 2018, and in 2026, after nine F1 seasons, also made his debut in a GT3 car.

Early years

Stroll started karting in Canada around the age of ten, in 2008. His development was guided by six-time karting world champion Mike Wilson, and he entered the international young-driver system early: in June 2010, aged just 11, he joined the Ferrari Driver Academy, which provided the framework for his racing development for years before he could get into a single-seater.

Junior single-seater career

Stroll's single-seater career was extremely dense and successful – it took him barely two seasons to go from the entry-level categories to an F1 contract.

2014 – Italian Formula 4 Championship (Prema Powerteam): championship title, with 7 wins, 13 podiums and 5 pole positions from 18 races. That same year he also raced in the non-championship Florida Winter Series for Ferrari Driver Academy, taking two podiums and a pole position at Homestead–Miami Speedway – already going up against future F1 rivals such as Nicholas Latifi and Max Verstappen.

2015 – Toyota Racing Series (New Zealand): championship title, with 4 wins and 10 podiums from 16 races. That same year he also entered the FIA Formula 3 European Championship with Prema Powerteam, finishing 5th overall with 1 win and 6 podiums from a 33-race season, and also taking the Rookie title. He additionally finished 8th at the non-championship Macau Grand Prix.

2016 – FIA Formula 3 European Championship (Prema Powerteam): this time Stroll dominated the field in near-untouchable form: across a 30-race season he collected 14 wins, 20 podiums and 14 pole positions for a total of 507 points. He clinched the title with four races still to go, ultimately finishing 187 points ahead of runner-up Maximilian Günther – becoming the first Canadian driver ever to win the FIA F3 European Championship.

The road to Formula 1

Talks with Williams began as early as the summer of 2015, and became official on 26 November 2015: Stroll joined the team's young driver development programme. By his own account, the move came down to how he saw the two programmes: he felt the Ferrari Driver Academy offered more basic preparation – gym work and mental coaching – while Williams brought him much closer to the day-to-day life of a Formula 1 team, with more simulator time and engineering collaboration on race weekends. He also considered it important that Williams had a strong tradition of developing young talent – including Valtteri Bottas, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button – whereas he saw the chances of an inexperienced rookie at Ferrari as smaller.

After securing the 2016 F3 championship title, Williams announced on 3 November 2016 that Stroll would join the team as a race driver from 2017 alongside Felipe Massa – making him, after Verstappen, the next driver to go straight from Formula 3 into Formula 1.

Formula 1 career

Stroll made his debut with Williams at the Australian Grand Prix in 2017, aged just 18, and then reached the podium at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix – making him, after Verstappen, the second-youngest podium finisher in F1 history. He also made history on the grid at the Italian Grand Prix, starting from second place as the youngest ever front-row starter. In the 2018 season Williams fell away sharply, and the team ended the year with the weakest car in the field.

From 2019 he became a driver for Racing Point – the successor to the former Force India, bought out of administration by a consortium led by his father – alongside Sergio Pérez. In the 2020 season he took the first pole position of his career in Turkey, making him the first Canadian driver to take an F1 pole since Jacques Villeneuve's achievement in 1997; that same year he finished second at the Italian Grand Prix and third at the Sakhir Grand Prix.

From 2021, after the team was renamed Aston Martin, he continued first alongside Sebastian Vettel and then, from 2023, alongside Fernando Alonso. The 2023 season brought the best championship finish of his career to date, despite having to skip winter preparation after breaking his wrists in a cycling accident. Stroll remains a driver for the Aston Martin Aramco team in 2026, with his contract running through the end of the season.

Racing alongside Formula 1

Stroll has tried his hand in categories outside Formula 1 on several occasions. In January 2016, before his F1 debut, he entered the Daytona 24 Hours with Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, driving the No. 01 Riley-Ford Daytona Prototype alongside Alex Wurz, Andy Priaulx and Brendon Hartley – the quartet finished fifth in the Prototype class.

In January 2018, by then a Williams Formula 1 driver, he lined up at the Daytona 24 Hours again: in the Jackie Chan DC Racing JOTA LMP2 ORECA (No. 37), his teammates were Felix Rosenqvist, Robin Frijns and Daniel Juncadella, and the quartet finished 15th overall.

In April 2026, after nine Formula 1 seasons, Stroll made his debut on completely new terrain: at the opening round of the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup, the six-hour race at Paul Ricard, he lined up in the Comtoyou Racing Aston Martin Vantage GT3 (No. 18) alongside Roberto Merhi and Mari Boya. Starting from 15th, the crew's race was hampered by a raft of penalties – more than eight minutes in total – and they ultimately finished second-to-last among the classified runners, in 48th, although Stroll's night-time pace held its own against the experienced GT drivers in the field.
