Who is Esteban Ocon?

Esteban Ocon is one of those Formula 1 drivers who built his career from almost nothing. He went from a small town in Normandy and a childhood spent around his family's car-repair workshop to winning back-to-back European championships as a teenager, and then to becoming a long-term fixture on the F1 grid. Along the way he regularly clashed with drivers such as Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Pierre Gasly – on more than one occasion coming out on the losing side of a title fight against them, and at other times coming out on top.

His junior single-seater career was particularly dense and successful: he won two championship titles in two seasons, which at the time secured him a direct route into Mercedes' young driver programme and then into Formula 1. His F1 career has since taken him through several team changes and low points, but in 2021 he also claimed his first race win.

Early years

Ocon first sat in a go-kart at the age of four during a family holiday, and – as he tells it – the people running the track couldn't get him out of it after that. His parents then bought him his own kart, and the family made serious financial sacrifices so their son could race: for periods they lived in a caravan while travelling the country for races. His father, Laurent Ocon, worked as a car mechanic, and the family sold both their house and their workshop to help fund his racing.

In French karting championships, Ocon already crossed paths as a child with rivals who would later also become Formula 1 drivers: in 2008 he won the French championship in the Cadet category ahead of Pierre Gasly and Anthoine Hubert, and in the Minime age group he fought memorable, close battles with Charles Leclerc – one such clash, in the final of the French Cup at Magny-Cours, ended in contact and Leclerc's retirement. Beyond the racing, the two families became friends. In 2010 he won the French KF3 championship, and in 2011 he finished second in the WSK Euro Series – by then he was also regularly racing against Max Verstappen, who went on to win that title.

Junior single-seater career

Ocon moved to single-seaters in 2012, competing in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 with Koiranen Motorsport, finishing the season 14th with a home podium at Paul Ricard, while also taking part in part of the Formula Renault 2.0 Alps series. In 2013 he joined ART Junior Team, where he took two wins (including one at Paul Ricard) and a pole position, ultimately finishing third with 159 points, 36 points behind champion Pierre Gasly.

In 2014, aged just 18, he raced for Prema Powerteam in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship and delivered one of the most dominant seasons of the year: with nine wins, 15 pole positions and 21 podiums for 478 points – 58 points ahead of runner-up Tom Blomqvist and 67 ahead of third-placed Max Verstappen – he secured the title with a round to spare, at Imola. As a reward for his win he was given a Ferrari test at Fiorano, and the Lotus F1 team invited him to an official test as well.

In 2015 he stepped up to the GP3 Series with ART Grand Prix, opening the season with nine consecutive second-place finishes, then taking 14 podiums from 18 races, before ultimately clinching the title in the championship finale, edging out Luca Ghiotto by just a few points. That same year he also joined Mercedes' young driver programme.

The road to Formula 1

Two consecutive junior championship titles accelerated Ocon's path to Formula 1. The Lotus test he earned after his 2014 F3 success already showed that he was competitive in an F1 car, and his 2015 GP3 title plus his place in the Mercedes young driver programme gave him the backing he needed. In 2016 he was simultaneously the reserve driver for the Renault Sport F1 team and a Mercedes-Benz DTM driver, all while F1 teams were watching him closely. When Rio Haryanto lost his seat at Manor Racing for financial reasons, Ocon took it over, making his Formula 1 debut aged 19 at the 2016 Belgian Grand Prix.

Formula 1 career

After half a season at Manor, he was signed by Force India for 2017, where, as Sergio Pérez's teammate, he scored his first points at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix and went on to show consistent, points-scoring form, although he collided with his teammate on track on more than one occasion. After Force India was bought by Lawrence Stroll in 2018 and relaunched as Racing Point, Ocon lost his race seat and spent 2019 as Mercedes' reserve driver – at the time his name was seriously discussed as a possible replacement for Valtteri Bottas, though the Finn ultimately kept his seat.

He returned to a race seat in 2020, joining Renault alongside Daniel Ricciardo, and finished second at the Sakhir Grand Prix for his first F1 podium. After the team was renamed Alpine for 2021, Fernando Alonso became his teammate, and that same year he took his maiden Formula 1 race win at the Hungarian Grand Prix, finishing ahead of Sebastian Vettel. In 2022 – again alongside Alonso – he had one of the best seasons of his career, and from 2023 his former karting rival Pierre Gasly became his teammate; that stretch also produced highlights such as a podium in Monaco and the wet 2024 São Paulo Grand Prix, where Ocon and Gasly delivered Alpine's first one-two finish since 2013. Ocon parted ways with Alpine at the end of the 2024 season, after the Qatar round, with Jack Doohan taking his seat for the season finale in Abu Dhabi, while Ocon was already preparing for his next team for 2025.

Racing alongside Formula 1

One of the distinctive features of Ocon's career is that early in his Formula 1 journey, in 2016, he raced in two championships in parallel: while working as Renault Sport F1's reserve driver, he also lined up in the DTM touring car championship for Mercedes-Benz. He started the first ten races of the season, with a best result of ninth at Zandvoort, before leaving the DTM programme when the F1 opportunity at Manor arose.
