Who is Arvid Lindblad?

Arvid Lindblad is the only rookie on the 2026 Formula 1 grid, lining up for Racing Bulls in Australia at just 18 years old. His career has been an almost uninterrupted climb: he first sat in a single-seater in 2022, and inside four seasons went from Formula 4 through Formula 3 and Formula 2 all the way to Formula 1, breaking records along the way — including becoming the youngest race winner in F2 history.

The British-Swedish driver is a Red Bull junior the team had been shaping since his early teens, and along the way he also became Britain's youngest-ever Formula 1 driver. On his mother's side he has Indian (Punjabi) roots too, a detail British media picked up on repeatedly around his debut.

His Formula 1 number, 41, has only been on the car for a single season so far, but his career to that point already explains why Red Bull backed him this early.

The early years

Lindblad first got into a kart at age five, at Daytona Sandown Park in Surrey, and moved into serious competitive karting around 2015. Red Bull first noticed him when he was around 12, though he wasn't formally signed to the Red Bull Junior Team until 2021, after a meeting with Helmut Marko in Portimão.

His karting career brought several national and international titles: he won the IAME Cadet category of the British karting championship in 2018, the WSK Super Master Series (OKJ) in 2020, and both the WSK Euro Series and WSK Final Cup (OK category) in 2021, while also finishing third at both the FIA Karting European and World Championships that year. His mentor from the age of nine was Oliver Rowland — now a Formula E world champion — who also helped him through his recovery after a karting crash in 2022.

Junior career

Lindblad moved to single-seaters in 2022, recovering from an injury sustained in that karting crash. He made his debut in Italian F4 from round five of the season and finished 17th in the standings after just eight races.

In 2023 he competed in three F4 championships at once, finishing close to the podium in each: third in Italian F4, fourth in Euro 4, and fifth in the UAE F4 championship. The highlight of his year, though, was the Formula 4 Macau Grand Prix, where he took pole and won both the qualification race and the main race — a result that also made him a finalist for the Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Award.

In 2024 he stepped up to Formula 3 with Prema Racing and was immediately one of the strongest drivers in the field in his debut season: he won the opening sprint race at Sakhir, then took his first feature-race win in Barcelona — which also happened to be the 100th race win in Formula 3 championship history. At Silverstone he became the first driver in the championship's history to win all three races (sprint, feature, super feature) in a single weekend. His four wins gave him a 20 percent win rate, a championship record, though a rough second half of the season left him fourth overall — still the field's best rookie, and a contributor to Prema's teams' championship.

That same year he also raced in the Formula Regional Middle East Championship with Mumbai Falcons, picking up a race win. Over the winter of 2024–25 he moved to the Formula Regional Oceania Championship with M2 Competition, winning six races and adding further podiums to clinch the title — a result worth 18 FIA super licence points, which he needed to become eligible to race in Formula 1.

The road to Formula 1

In 2025 Lindblad joined Campos Racing in Formula 2, instantly becoming the youngest driver on the grid. His season opened with a historic moment: winning the Jeddah sprint race at 17 years and 254 days old made him the youngest race winner in Formula 2 history. In Barcelona he converted pole into a feature-race win — the victory he later named as his favourite of the season — and in Abu Dhabi he led a sprint race from lights to flag. The season wasn't flawless: crashes at Monza and Spa-Francorchamps, plus a technical disqualification, dented his tally, and he ultimately finished sixth in the standings with six podiums, three wins and 134 points.

On the strength of his form, the FIA World Motor Sport Council granted him an exemption from the Super Licence age limit on 10 June 2025, when he was still only 17 — under a 2024 rule change that allows exceptionally talented drivers to be licensed early. At the time of the decision he was already third in the championship, with two race wins and a pole position. In parallel, Red Bull put him in the Formula 1 car for two free practice sessions: he was 14th standing in for Yuki Tsunoda at the British Grand Prix, and set the sixth-fastest time in Max Verstappen's car at the Mexico City Grand Prix, a run that made a strong impression on the team, before a further FP1 outing at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In December 2025 it was announced that he would join Racing Bulls for the 2026 season alongside Liam Lawson, after Isack Hadjar was promoted to Red Bull's senior team and Tsunoda departed after five seasons.

Formula 1 career

Lindblad made his Formula 1 debut in 2026 at 18 years old, racing for Racing Bulls with car number 41 — becoming Britain's youngest-ever Formula 1 driver, surpassing Oliver Bearman's previous record. His debut at the Australian Grand Prix was eye-catching: starting ninth, he climbed to third on the opening lap and spent the race trading positions with the likes of Max Verstappen and his childhood idol Lewis Hamilton, eventually crossing the line eighth to become the third-youngest points scorer in Formula 1 history.

As the season progressed he steadily found his rhythm, scoring points in each of the final six races before the summer break, and out-qualifying his more experienced teammate Liam Lawson at several grands prix, including Japan, Canada, Britain, Belgium and Hungary. His rookie season told a mixed but promising story — the odd mistake born of inexperience still surfaced, but his qualifying pace and race-day progress both suggested one of the Red Bull academy's biggest prospects had truly arrived in Formula 1.
